48 Hours Offline in Akaroa | A Digital Detox at Newton Heights

Newton Heights corner view

Modern life has a way of filling every spare moment. Notifications, emails, scrolling, group chats, endless tabs left open in our minds. Even when we’re meant to be resting, it can be hard to switch off properly. That’s why the idea of a digital detox feels so appealing, not as a grand gesture, but as a simple decision to step away from the noise and reconnect with what actually makes us feel good. Akaroa is the perfect place to do exactly that.

Set on the edge of a beautiful volcanic harbour, Akaroa has a natural calm to it. The pace is slower, the scenery invites you to look up, and the days feel softer somehow. It’s the sort of destination that doesn’t demand a packed itinerary. Instead, it gives you permission to breathe, take your time, and let a few simple pleasures fill the day.

A 48-hour digital detox in Akaroa doesn’t need to be strict or complicated. It’s not about locking your phone away or pretending technology doesn’t exist. It’s about using your time differently. Checking in less. Looking outward more. Letting the landscape, the food, the conversation, and the quiet do their work.

At Newton Heights, the setting makes this feel easy. Wake to birdsong, open the curtains to harbour views, and start the day slowly with breakfast rather than a screen. Guests staying in the Bed & Breakfast rooms can enjoy a complimentary cooked breakfast, while apartment guests have continental provisions ready for a relaxed, self-paced morning. Coffee tastes better when there’s nowhere urgent to be.

From there, the day can unfold gently. Head into the village for a wander, stopping at boutiques, galleries, and waterfront cafés. Leave your phone in your bag and take in the details instead — the gardens, the old cottages, the shifting light on the harbour, the stillness between one street and the next. It’s amazing how much more you notice when you’re not half-distracted.

For those wanting a little more movement, Akaroa offers plenty of ways to reconnect with the natural world. A scenic walk, a drive over the hills, or a harbour cruise all create the kind of pause that busy people often don’t realise they’ve been craving. The sea air, the birds, and the dramatic peninsula landscape have a grounding effect. You feel smaller in the best possible way, and with that comes perspective.

Back at Newton Heights, slowing down is part of the experience. Read a book on the terrace. Pour a glass of local wine from Caldera Estate. Sink into a private spa pool if your stay includes one. Watch the sky change as the afternoon drifts into evening. These are the sorts of quiet rituals that can feel almost luxurious when everyday life is so often built around urgency.

And that’s really what a digital detox in Akaroa is about, not deprivation, but restoration. It’s swapping constant stimulation for calm. Replacing rushed habits with slower rhythms. Reconnecting with your partner, your thoughts, your surroundings, or simply the version of yourself that feels most rested.

Dinner in Akaroa suits this mood perfectly too. Long meals, local wine, and no reason to hurry. Afterwards, return to your room or apartment and let the evening stay simple. No endless scrolling in bed. No catching up on things that can wait. Just quiet, comfort, and the chance to sleep deeply.

By the second morning, something usually shifts. The shoulders drop. The mind feels a little less crowded. You’re not necessarily transformed, but you do feel better, clearer, calmer, more present. Sometimes that’s all a good escape needs to do.

You don’t have to travel far or disappear for weeks to reset. Sometimes 48 hours is enough, especially when the setting is right. In Akaroa, with its harbour views, slower pace, and understated beauty, it becomes surprisingly easy to disconnect from the digital world and reconnect with yourself.

At Newton Heights, that feeling is built into the stay. Warm hospitality, beautiful surroundings, and thoughtfully designed spaces make it easier to step back from the noise and enjoy what’s right in front of you. If you’ve been feeling overdue for a break, perhaps this is your sign to close the laptop, silence the notifications, and spend 48 hours offline at Newton Heights.

Our recent stay at Newton Heights B&B was the highlight of our three-week tour of South Island. The owner/hosts Brendon and Gail are engaging and gracious, their architecturally designed home is stunning and comfortable and the breakfast (complete with barista quality coffee choices) was abundant and divine. Beautiful views over Akaroa Harbour and easy walking distance to the village. Simply perfect in all regards!

This review may sound a little extreme however as a B&B experience this is a "must do". It's not just the joy de la vive of the welcoming hosts Gail and Brendan or the views from all corners of their beautiful home. Its not just the spa pool, the conversation, the silence as required, the comfort, cleanliness and fab breakfast its the feeling you've walked into the true warmth of an Akaroa experience - it was unforgettable!
