5 Reasons Akaroa Feels Different to Anywhere Else in New Zealand

New Zealand is full of beautiful destinations, but Akaroa has a character all of its own. Tucked into the hills of Banks Peninsula, this small harbour town feels quietly distinct from anywhere else in the country. It’s not just the scenery, though, that certainly plays its part. It’s the atmosphere, the pace, the history, and the way everything comes together to create a stay that feels both relaxed and memorable. If you’ve never visited before, here are five reasons Akaroa feels a little different to everywhere else.

1. Its French heritage gives the town a character all its own

Akaroa’s French roots are one of the first things visitors notice. From the street names and charming cottages to the relaxed café culture, the town has a personality that feels unlike the rest of New Zealand. There’s a softness and romance to it, woven through the architecture, the gardens, and the waterfront. That heritage doesn’t make Akaroa feel overly themed or touristy. Instead, it gives the village a subtle elegance and a sense of history that makes wandering through town feel special. You can spend an afternoon simply strolling, stopping for coffee, browsing small shops, and taking in the atmosphere.

2. The harbour setting is truly spectacular

Akaroa sits on an ancient volcanic harbour, and that landscape gives it a dramatic beauty that feels both wild and peaceful. The hills rise steeply around the water, the light shifts beautifully throughout the day, and the views seem to meet you at every turn. Whether you’re looking out from the waterfront, driving over the peninsula, or waking up to a harbour view from your room, the scenery never feels ordinary. It’s one of those places where even simple moments, breakfast, a short walk, a glass of wine before dinner, feel elevated by what surrounds you.

3. It offers wildlife experiences without feeling overrun

Akaroa is one of those rare places where wildlife encounters feel genuinely close to nature. Harbour cruises, dolphin tours, kayaking, and coastal walks all give visitors the chance to experience the area’s birdlife and marine life in a way that feels meaningful rather than rushed. There’s a strong connection between the town and its natural environment. You can spend the morning exploring the village, then head out onto the water or into the surrounding landscape and feel as though you’ve stepped into a completely different world. That combination of charm and wildness is part of what makes Akaroa so memorable.

4. The food and wine scene is small, local, and beautifully done

Akaroa doesn’t try to compete with big-city dining scenes, and that’s exactly part of its appeal. The food here feels thoughtful, local, and easy to enjoy. There are cosy cafés, waterfront restaurants, fresh seafood, local produce, and cellar doors nearby that invite you to slow down and savour the experience. It’s the kind of place where long lunches make sense, where a tasting at a boutique winery feels like an afternoon well spent, and where meals become part of the rhythm of the stay rather than just something fitted in between activities. It feels personal and unfussy, while still offering quality and character.

5. The pace is slower in the best possible way

Perhaps the biggest difference of all is the pace. Akaroa doesn’t ask you to rush. It’s not about ticking off endless attractions or moving quickly from one thing to the next. Instead, it invites you to settle in, look around, and enjoy the small details. That slower pace is one of the reasons so many people fall in love with it. A couple of nights here can feel far more restorative than a busier break somewhere larger. It suits couples, families, friends, and solo travellers alike, anyone looking for a destination that feels calm, beautiful, and a little more personal.

At Newton Heights, that sense of place becomes even more pronounced. Perched above the harbour, it offers a luxury accommodation experience that reflects the character of Akaroa itself: elegant but approachable, peaceful but warm, and designed to help guests slow down and feel at home. With a mix of Bed & Breakfast rooms and apartments, it gives you the space to experience Akaroa in a way that feels relaxed and unhurried.

There are plenty of places in New Zealand that are beautiful. What makes Akaroa different is how it makes you feel while you’re there. A little more rested. A little more grounded. And already thinking about when you can come back.

Our recent stay at Newton Heights B&B was the highlight of our three-week tour of South Island. The owner/hosts Brendon and Gail are engaging and gracious, their architecturally designed home is stunning and comfortable and the breakfast (complete with barista quality coffee choices) was abundant and divine. Beautiful views over Akaroa Harbour and easy walking distance to the village. Simply perfect in all regards!

This review may sound a little extreme however as a B&B experience this is a "must do". It's not just the joy de la vive of the welcoming hosts Gail and Brendan or the views from all corners of their beautiful home. Its not just the spa pool, the conversation, the silence as required, the comfort, cleanliness and fab breakfast its the feeling you've walked into the true warmth of an Akaroa experience - it was unforgettable!
