Choosing the right room can shape your entire getaway. At Newton Heights, every stay offers quiet luxury, sweeping Akaroa views, and warm, personal hospitality, yet each room and apartment has its own personality. Here’s a simple guide to help you pick the best fit for your visit, whether you’re planning a romantic weekend, a family escape, or a friends’ reunion.
Bed and Breakfast options:
• Fantail Room: Light-filled, romantic, and oriented to the harbour, Fantail is perfect for couples who want a private terrace, a deep soaking bath, and the ease of an ensuite. Expect luxe linen, spa towels, and those small touches that make slow mornings even better.
• Bellbird Room: Elegant and classic with a private bathroom, Bellbird suits guests who love timeless style and a quiet cup of tea on the terrace. Booked in conjunction with a main room, it’s ideal for extended family or friends travelling together.
• Pukeko Room: Designed with families and groups in mind, Pukeko offers two bunks and two king-singles (which can form a king). It opens to its own deck with sea views and must be booked alongside a main room when travelling with children. This has a bathroom directly across the hall.
All the B&B rooms have use of the shared spa, outdoor dining and living room facilities. With breakfast and a view, you can’t go wrong.
Gail and Brendon can also arrange catering options for group dinners and private functions on request.

Self-contained Apartment options:
• Takahe Studio: A beautifully appointed two-level studio with full kitchen, open-plan living, a private spa pool, and a balcony that drinks in the harbour light. A romantic choice for couples wanting extra space and the option to self-cater. Includes continental breakfast provisions.
• Kingfisher Apartment: One-bedroom apartment beside the Garden of Tane with open-plan living, a private spa pool, and a sunny corner deck. The king bedroom connects to a modern ensuite; harbour views set the tone for a restful, self-contained stay.
• Kereru Apartment: Our two-bedroom haven for friends and family with a gas fire, full kitchen, generous outdoor living, BBQ, and a private spa pool. Both bedrooms are king; a shared Jack-and-Jill bathroom keeps things easy. Continental breakfast provisions are included.

Whether you prefer the ease of a hosted stay or the freedom to do your own thing, Newton Heights gives you both. The Bed & Breakfast rooms are made for slow, pampered mornings and popping downstairs to say hi to Gail and Brendon, while the self-contained apartments are ideal if you want more space, privacy and flexibility, especially for longer stays, groups, or if you like to come and go on your own schedule.
Breakfast is an essential part of the Newton Heights rhythm. Guests in the Bed & Breakfast rooms enjoy a leisurely cooked breakfast alongside continental favourites each morning, while apartment guests receive continental provisions, including Gail’s homemade jams and granola, to enjoy at their own pace. Either way, you’ll start the day with good coffee and a view.
Still unsure? Tell us how you like to travel, lazy mornings, long walks, winery afternoons, or family-friendly beach days, and we’ll recommend the perfect fit. Every space is designed to feel personal and luxurious, with the flexibility to make the stay your own.
Take in the sea breeze and stunning sunsets on your own private outdoor terraces.
Enjoy a soothing soak while taking in stunning views, each apartment features its own private spa, while B&B guests can unwind in a shared outdoor spa.
Stay connected to high speed WiFi with overage throughout the properties.
Comfort comes in the form of king-sized beds with luxurious bed linen & exquisite interiors.

Our recent stay at Newton Heights B&B was the highlight of our three-week tour of South Island. The owner/hosts Brendon and Gail are engaging and gracious, their architecturally designed home is stunning and comfortable and the breakfast (complete with barista quality coffee choices) was abundant and divine. Beautiful views over Akaroa Harbour and easy walking distance to the village. Simply perfect in all regards!

This review may sound a little extreme however as a B&B experience this is a "must do". It's not just the joy de la vive of the welcoming hosts Gail and Brendan or the views from all corners of their beautiful home. Its not just the spa pool, the conversation, the silence as required, the comfort, cleanliness and fab breakfast its the feeling you've walked into the true warmth of an Akaroa experience - it was unforgettable!
