The Akaroa bucket list: 7 Experiences to have at least once

Newton Heights B&B View

Akaroa is one of those places that stays with you. Maybe it’s the harbour, framed by the folds of an ancient volcano. Maybe it’s the village charm, the French influence, the wildlife, or the way the pace of life seems to soften as soon as you arrive. Whatever it is, Akaroa has a way of making even a short stay feel memorable.

If you’re planning a visit, there are some experiences that deserve a place on your list. Not because they’re overhyped or obligatory, but because they genuinely capture what makes this corner of Banks Peninsula so special.

Here are seven Akaroa experiences worth having at least once.

  1. Wake up to harbour views

Some destinations are best appreciated slowly, and Akaroa is one of them. There’s something special about waking up above the harbour, watching the light shift over the water, and starting the day without rushing anywhere. Staying somewhere elevated, peaceful, and beautifully connected to the landscape changes the whole feel of the trip. At Newton Heights, those views are part of the experience from the moment you arrive.

  1. Take a cruise on Akaroa Harbour

Seeing Akaroa from the water gives you a completely different perspective. The harbour feels bigger, the hills more dramatic, and the connection to the peninsula’s volcanic landscape even clearer. A cruise is also one of the best ways to encounter the area’s wildlife, with the chance to see dolphins, seals, seabirds, and more. It’s one of those classic Akaroa experiences for good reason.

  1. Wander the village and soak up the French heritage

Akaroa’s French roots help give it a character unlike anywhere else in New Zealand. Spend time wandering the streets, admiring the historic buildings, popping into boutiques and galleries, and stopping at a café for coffee or something sweet. It’s not a place to rush through. The pleasure is in the wandering.

  1. Enjoy a long lunch or winery visit

Akaroa and the wider Banks Peninsula region reward those who like to linger. Whether it’s a waterfront lunch, a platter with local wine, or a tasting at a nearby cellar door like Caldera Vineyard Estate, food and wine are a big part of the experience here. There’s a relaxed quality to dining in Akaroa that suits the destination perfectly.

  1. Take in the peninsula on foot

You don’t need to be a serious hiker to enjoy the walks around Akaroa. From scenic strolls to more adventurous tracks, there are countless ways to get out into the landscape and appreciate the views. The hills, coastline, and native bush all feel close at hand, and even a short walk can be enough to make you feel immersed in the beauty of the area.

  1. Spend an evening under the stars

One of the joys of staying somewhere peaceful is what happens after dark. Once the day’s exploring is done, settle in with a glass of wine, step outside, and enjoy the stillness of an Akaroa evening. Whether you’re on a private balcony, in an outdoor spa, or simply wrapped in a blanket taking in the night sky, these quieter moments often become the most memorable.

  1. Slow down enough to actually enjoy it

This may be the most important experience of all. Akaroa is not a place that needs to be conquered or packed full. Its magic lies in the slower moments; breakfast with a view, an unplanned stop in a gallery, a peaceful walk, an evening that stretches out without a schedule. The best way to experience Akaroa is to leave a little room in your plans and let the place work its charm.

That’s one of the reasons Newton Heights suits the destination so well. It reflects the same sense of calm, beauty, and understated luxury that makes Akaroa special. With boutique rooms and apartments, warm hospitality, and a setting that encourages guests to slow down, it offers a stay that feels fully in step with the destination itself.

Akaroa may be small, but it delivers the kind of experiences that linger. Whether it’s your first visit or your fifth, these are the moments that remind you why people return again and again.

If Akaroa is on your list, make sure you experience it properly, slowly, beautifully, and with time to take it all in.

Our recent stay at Newton Heights B&B was the highlight of our three-week tour of South Island. The owner/hosts Brendon and Gail are engaging and gracious, their architecturally designed home is stunning and comfortable and the breakfast (complete with barista quality coffee choices) was abundant and divine. Beautiful views over Akaroa Harbour and easy walking distance to the village. Simply perfect in all regards!

This review may sound a little extreme however as a B&B experience this is a "must do". It's not just the joy de la vive of the welcoming hosts Gail and Brendan or the views from all corners of their beautiful home. Its not just the spa pool, the conversation, the silence as required, the comfort, cleanliness and fab breakfast its the feeling you've walked into the true warmth of an Akaroa experience - it was unforgettable!
