Akaroa for Food Lovers: Local Produce, Wineries and Where to Eat

Ma-Maison

Akaroa is little, but it eats like a much bigger destination. If you love food that tells you where you are, long lunches in the sun, and small-batch drinks made on the Peninsula, this harbour town belongs on your list.

What makes it special is scale: most places are owner-run, seasonal, and have a personal feel. You can talk to the people who grow it, make it, pour it, all on the doorstep of Newton Heights.

1. Start at Newton Heights
Guests in the Bed & Breakfast rooms start with a hosted breakfast: local/seasonal fruit, Gail’s homemade jams and granola. It’s generous, unhurried and looks straight out over the harbour, the kind of breakfast you remember because of how it felt, not just what was on the plate. Apartment guests find beautifully curated continental provisions in their kitchen, so if you want to sleep in, make coffee in a robe, and eat on the deck in quiet, you can.

2. Eat in the village
Down in Akaroa, you’ll find French-influenced dining (a nod to the town’s history), fresh seafood, and relaxed waterfront spots that are perfect after a cruise or a walk. Book for Friday and Saturday nights, the good places fill fast in season. Favourites include Ma Maison, The Seafood Kitchen, Tiny Bar and Eatery, Akaroa Fish & Chips and many many more!!

3. Visit the vineyards
Just outside the village, small vineyards like French Peak and Takamatua Valley capture the Peninsula in a glass with coastal air, rolling greens, and that slightly wild Banks Peninsula feeling. Perched above Newton Heights, you have Caldera Estate, they make an easy afternoon outing, local wines paired with gorgeous food, and only a short distance back to your accommodation.

4. Add something artisanal
March is a lovely time for tastings, from craft spirits to local honey, jams and preserves. If you like to go home with something “Akaroa” in your bag, tell us, and we can point you to the people doing small but beautiful things.

Stay up the hill, eat down in the village, finish in the spa. That’s the Newton Heights way to do Akaroa.

Our recent stay at Newton Heights B&B was the highlight of our three-week tour of South Island. The owner/hosts Brendon and Gail are engaging and gracious, their architecturally designed home is stunning and comfortable and the breakfast (complete with barista quality coffee choices) was abundant and divine. Beautiful views over Akaroa Harbour and easy walking distance to the village. Simply perfect in all regards!

This review may sound a little extreme however as a B&B experience this is a "must do". It's not just the joy de la vive of the welcoming hosts Gail and Brendan or the views from all corners of their beautiful home. Its not just the spa pool, the conversation, the silence as required, the comfort, cleanliness and fab breakfast its the feeling you've walked into the true warmth of an Akaroa experience - it was unforgettable!
