Akaroa is well known for its charming village, beautiful harbour and relaxed coastal atmosphere. But venture a little further, and you'll discover that Banks Peninsula has so much more to offer.
From quiet beaches and sheltered bays to scenic walking tracks and winding coastal roads, there are plenty of beautiful places to explore beyond the village. Whether you're looking for a peaceful afternoon by the water, a refreshing walk through native bush or simply somewhere new to discover, here are a few of our favourite places to add to your itinerary.
Discover the Peninsula's Beautiful Beaches
Okains Bay
One of Banks Peninsula's lovely coastal escapes, Okains Bay is a beautiful spot to spend a sunny afternoon. With its wide sandy beach, rolling green hills and peaceful surroundings, it's ideal for a picnic, a beach walk or simply enjoying some time away from the busier parts of the peninsula.
While you're there, consider visiting the Okains Bay Museum, home to a fascinating collection of Māori and early settler history.
Le Bons Bay
Tucked away on the eastern side of Banks Peninsula, Le Bons Bay is another beautiful spot worth discovering. Surrounded by dramatic hills and farmland, the sandy beach feels wonderfully secluded.
It's a lovely place to slow down, enjoy the coastal scenery and take in the natural beauty of the peninsula. Pack a picnic, bring a good book and make an afternoon of it.
Little Akaloa
For something a little different, take the scenic drive to Little Akaloa, a small coastal settlement with a quiet, unhurried atmosphere. The journey itself is part of the experience, with beautiful views across the surrounding countryside and coastline.
It's the kind of place that reminds you there's no need to rush when exploring Banks Peninsula.
Explore Some of the Region's Best Walks
Hinewai Reserve
For those who love being outdoors, Hinewai Reserve is a wonderful place to explore. This remarkable conservation area is dedicated to restoring native forest and is home to an extensive network of walking tracks.
With options ranging from shorter walks to more challenging routes, visitors can enjoy peaceful forest surroundings, native birdlife and beautiful views across the peninsula.
It's a lovely way to experience a different side of Banks Peninsula, away from the coastline and surrounded by nature.
Ōtepatotu Scenic Reserve
If you're looking for beautiful views without committing to a full-day hike, Ōtepatotu Scenic Reserve is well worth a visit.
Located along Summit Road, this walking track takes you through enchanting native forest, where moss-covered trees create an almost magical atmosphere. The climb rewards you with sweeping views over Akaroa Harbour and the surrounding landscape.
Allow approximately 1.5 hours for the loop, and be prepared for some steeper sections along the way.
Children's Bay Farm Walkway
Closer to Akaroa, the Children's Bay Farm Walkway offers a lovely combination of coastal views, open farmland and fresh sea air.
The walk climbs above the harbour, with beautiful views looking back towards Akaroa. You can choose a shorter walk to the Rhino sculpture viewpoint or continue along the longer circuit towards Takamatua.
It's a great option for guests wanting to stretch their legs without travelling too far from the village.
Take the Scenic Route
Sometimes the best way to explore Banks Peninsula is simply to get in the car and see where the road takes you.
Summit Road offers some of the region's most spectacular scenery, with elevated views across rolling hills, hidden valleys and the coastline beyond. Along the way, you'll find opportunities to stop for photographs, enjoy a short walk or venture down towards one of the quieter bays.
The roads can be narrow and winding in places, so take your time and enjoy the journey rather than rushing to your destination.

One of the lovely things about staying in Akaroa is having the freedom to explore the wider peninsula while still enjoying the comforts of the village.
Spend the day discovering quiet beaches, walking through native bush or exploring scenic coastal roads, then return to Newton Heights to relax, enjoy the harbour views and unwind.
Whether you're visiting for a weekend or staying a little longer, there's always something new to discover around Banks Peninsula. And sometimes, the places you stumble upon along the way become the most memorable part of your stay.

Our recent stay at Newton Heights B&B was the highlight of our three-week tour of South Island. The owner/hosts Brendon and Gail are engaging and gracious, their architecturally designed home is stunning and comfortable and the breakfast (complete with barista quality coffee choices) was abundant and divine. Beautiful views over Akaroa Harbour and easy walking distance to the village. Simply perfect in all regards!

This review may sound a little extreme however as a B&B experience this is a "must do". It's not just the joy de la vive of the welcoming hosts Gail and Brendan or the views from all corners of their beautiful home. Its not just the spa pool, the conversation, the silence as required, the comfort, cleanliness and fab breakfast its the feeling you've walked into the true warmth of an Akaroa experience - it was unforgettable!
