When Australians think of a New Zealand holiday, the big-name destinations often come to mind first like Queenstown, Rotorua, Auckland, and Wanaka. But if you’re looking for something a little more relaxed, a little more boutique, and a lot more personal, Akaroa is the kind of place that quietly wins you over.
Perched on the edge of a beautiful harbour on Banks Peninsula, Akaroa feels like a true escape without requiring a major travel commitment. For Australians wanting to pop across the ditch for a few days or build a longer South Island trip around somewhere special, it offers a softer, slower kind of New Zealand experience, one filled with sweeping views, wildlife encounters, excellent food and wine, and the kind of warm hospitality that makes a place memorable.
One of the best parts is how easy it is to get here. Fly into Christchurch from Australia, pick up a hire car, and within around 90 minutes, you can be winding your way over the hills to Akaroa. The drive itself feels like the perfect introduction to the region, with changing landscapes, sea views, and that lovely sense of leaving the city behind. By the time you arrive in Akaroa, it already feels like you’ve discovered somewhere a little different.
That sense of discovery is part of what makes the town so appealing. Akaroa isn’t loud or overbuilt. It has charm, history, and a distinctly intimate feel. Its French heritage gives the village a unique personality, while the harbour and surrounding hills create a dramatic natural backdrop that feels peaceful rather than crowded. It’s ideal for travellers who love beautiful places but don’t necessarily want the pace or intensity of a bigger tourist hub.
Once you arrive, it’s easy to settle into the rhythm of the place. Mornings are made for coffee by the waterfront, slow walks through the village, and taking in the harbour views. Days can be as active or as relaxed as you like. You might head out on a nature cruise to spot dolphins, seals, and birdlife, visit a local winery, browse boutique shops and galleries, or simply spend the afternoon over a long lunch with a glass of local wine in hand.
Akaroa is also a wonderful destination for food lovers. Fresh seafood, local produce, boutique wine, and cosy dining spots all come together here in a way that feels effortless rather than overdone. There’s a real sense of quality, but also ease, exactly what many travellers are looking for when they want to unwind properly.
For Australians used to short-haul escapes, Akaroa works beautifully as a long weekend or an easy addition to a wider New Zealand itinerary. It offers enough to do without ever feeling overwhelming, and enough beauty to make even the simplest moments feel special. That might be a sunset over the harbour, breakfast with a view, or returning to your room after a day out and opening the doors to fresh air and stillness.
That’s where Newton Heights comes in. Set above the harbour, Newton Heights offers a boutique accommodation experience that feels elevated, peaceful, and deeply personal. With a mix of Bed & Breakfast rooms and self-contained apartments, it suits couples, friends, and families looking for somewhere that feels both stylish and welcoming. The views are part of the experience, but so too are the thoughtful details, breakfast provisions, beautifully designed interiors, private outdoor spaces, and the warm hosting style of Gail and Brendon.
For Australian guests, Newton Heights is the kind of stay that makes a trip feel complete. It captures the quieter side of New Zealand hospitality, personal, understated, and focused on comfort. It’s not about rushing from one attraction to the next. It’s about enjoying where you are, making space to slow down, and leaving feeling as though you’ve truly been away.
If you’re looking for a New Zealand escape that feels a little less obvious and a lot more memorable, Akaroa is well worth the trip. It may be just across the ditch, but once you arrive, it feels a world away.

Our recent stay at Newton Heights B&B was the highlight of our three-week tour of South Island. The owner/hosts Brendon and Gail are engaging and gracious, their architecturally designed home is stunning and comfortable and the breakfast (complete with barista quality coffee choices) was abundant and divine. Beautiful views over Akaroa Harbour and easy walking distance to the village. Simply perfect in all regards!

This review may sound a little extreme however as a B&B experience this is a "must do". It's not just the joy de la vive of the welcoming hosts Gail and Brendan or the views from all corners of their beautiful home. Its not just the spa pool, the conversation, the silence as required, the comfort, cleanliness and fab breakfast its the feeling you've walked into the true warmth of an Akaroa experience - it was unforgettable!
