There’s a very specific kind of romance Akaroa does better in the cooler months than in high summer. The harbour is calmer, the hills look deeper green, the village is quieter, and you can actually hear the water from up the hill. It feels private. It’s a gorgeous time to visit Newton Heights and Akaroa.
Choose a room that’s made for lingering. For couples, we recommend one of the self-contained options like Takahe Studio, Kingfisher Apartment or Kererū Apartment. Each has its own character, but they all give you privacy, space to stretch out, and in true Newton Heights style, access to a private outdoor spa so you can sit under the stars with a glass of pinot and watch the harbour lights. If you prefer a hosted B&B experience, the Fantail Room has that romantic, light-filled feel and a deep soaking bath, you can treat it like a hotel stay but warmer, more personal.

Build your 24-hour romance itinerary. Arrive mid-afternoon, check in, open the doors to the view and just… pause. As the light softens, move out to the deck for golden hour, the harbour turns that blue-gold colour that makes every photo look edited. Dinner can be as simple or as special as you like: we can book you into one of Akaroa’s cosier, French-leaning restaurants in the village, or help arrange catering so you don’t have to leave the property at all. Then it’s time for the spa and stargazing. March and early winter often bring clear, crisp nights, which makes slipping into the hot water with a glass of red feel extra indulgent. The next morning, keep it slow with a hosted breakfast in the B&B, or enjoy Gail’s homemade granola and preserves in your apartment at your own pace.
Why shoulder season is better for couples? This is when Akaroa gives you its most intimate version. The village is quieter, so you’re not sharing every moment with day trippers or families on school holidays. You can choose the room or apartment you want, not whatever is left. The light is softer, better for walks, photos and long looks at the harbour, and cosy moments finally make sense: fires, blankets, deep baths, spa sessions at night. Newton Heights is built for that kind of stay, where you dip in and out of town but always come back to somewhere that feels private and inviting.

Little luxuries we can help with. If you’re celebrating an anniversary, a babymoon, a proposal or just carving out time together, tell us. We can have bubbles waiting, arrange flowers, recommend the right dinner spot for the weather, or map out a short scenic walk so you still get to explore Akaroa without losing the relaxed, cocooned feeling.
A romantic stay at Newton Heights isn’t about being formal; it’s about feeling looked after, having space to yourselves, and always, always having a view to come back to.
Take in the sea breeze and stunning sunsets on your own private outdoor terraces.
Enjoy a soothing soak while taking in stunning views, each apartment features its own private spa, while B&B guests can unwind in a shared outdoor spa.
Stay connected to high speed WiFi with overage throughout the properties.
Comfort comes in the form of king-sized beds with luxurious bed linen & exquisite interiors.

Our recent stay at Newton Heights B&B was the highlight of our three-week tour of South Island. The owner/hosts Brendon and Gail are engaging and gracious, their architecturally designed home is stunning and comfortable and the breakfast (complete with barista quality coffee choices) was abundant and divine. Beautiful views over Akaroa Harbour and easy walking distance to the village. Simply perfect in all regards!

This review may sound a little extreme however as a B&B experience this is a "must do". It's not just the joy de la vive of the welcoming hosts Gail and Brendan or the views from all corners of their beautiful home. Its not just the spa pool, the conversation, the silence as required, the comfort, cleanliness and fab breakfast its the feeling you've walked into the true warmth of an Akaroa experience - it was unforgettable!
