Spring in Akaroa: Why Now Is the Perfect Time to Plan Your Escape

There’s something special about Akaroa in spring. The days begin to stretch a little longer, the hills are green, gardens come back to life and there’s that first hint that summer isn’t too far away. It’s a beautiful time to visit in its own right, and the perfect reminder to start planning those warmer-weather escapes.

Whether you’re dreaming of a quiet weekend away or a few days exploring Banks Peninsula, here’s why Akaroa deserves a place in your spring and summer plans.

Akaroa comes alive again

After the slower pace of winter, spring brings a fresh energy to the village. Flowers begin to bloom, the landscape is lush and green and warmer days make it increasingly tempting to spend more time outdoors.

It’s a lovely time simply to wander. Take a walk along the waterfront, explore the village, stop somewhere for coffee or lunch and enjoy Akaroa without needing too much of a plan.

Spend more time by the water

Akaroa Harbour is beautiful year-round, but the arrival of warmer weather opens up even more opportunities to get out and enjoy it.

Head out on the water, explore the coastline or simply find a sunny spot overlooking the harbour and watch the boats go by. Akaroa is also home to an incredible variety of wildlife, so keep an eye out for some of the locals while you explore.

Get outside and explore

Spring is made for exploring Banks Peninsula.

The surrounding hills, bays and walking tracks offer plenty of reasons to pull on your walking shoes and head outside. You don’t need to tackle a huge hike either, sometimes a gentle walk followed by a long lunch is exactly the kind of day you came to Akaroa for.

As the days get longer, there’s also more time to explore without feeling rushed.

Make the most of slow mornings

One of the best things about getting away is having nowhere you need to be first thing in the morning. At Newton Heights, mornings can start with breakfast, coffee and views across Akaroa before deciding what the day might hold.

Perhaps you’ll walk into the village, head out for an adventure around the Peninsula or decide that staying put with a good book is a perfectly acceptable plan.

Longer afternoons and evenings

The return of longer days is one of our favourite things about spring. There’s more time for an afternoon exploring, a drink in the sunshine or simply sitting outside and watching the light change over the surrounding hills.

And when summer arrives, those long evenings become even better, particularly when enjoyed with a glass of local wine and nowhere else to be.

Start thinking about summer

Spring also means one thing: summer is on its way.

Akaroa is a favourite warm-weather destination, so if you’re already thinking about a summer break, now is a good time to start making plans.

A few days here can be as relaxed or adventurous as you like. Spend your time out on the harbour, exploring the Peninsula and discovering local food, or embrace a slower itinerary of breakfasts, walks, afternoon drinks and plenty of time taking in the view.

Your spring, or summer escape

Just a five-minute walk from Akaroa village, Newton Heights gives you the best of both worlds: close enough to wander into town, while tucked away enough to feel like a proper escape. Come for the harbour, the landscape and everything there is to explore. Stay for the slow mornings, beautiful views and chance to switch off for a while.

Our recent stay at Newton Heights B&B was the highlight of our three-week tour of South Island. The owner/hosts Brendon and Gail are engaging and gracious, their architecturally designed home is stunning and comfortable and the breakfast (complete with barista quality coffee choices) was abundant and divine. Beautiful views over Akaroa Harbour and easy walking distance to the village. Simply perfect in all regards!

This review may sound a little extreme however as a B&B experience this is a "must do". It's not just the joy de la vive of the welcoming hosts Gail and Brendan or the views from all corners of their beautiful home. Its not just the spa pool, the conversation, the silence as required, the comfort, cleanliness and fab breakfast its the feeling you've walked into the true warmth of an Akaroa experience - it was unforgettable!
