The Ultimate Couples Escape: 10 Little Luxuries You’ll Find at Newton Heights

Sun and wine Newton Heights Balcony

Sometimes the best escapes aren’t about packing an itinerary with things to do. They’re about having the time and space to slow down, enjoy where you are and appreciate the little things.

Perched above Akaroa Harbour and just a short walk from the village, Newton Heights is designed for exactly that. From slow mornings and beautiful views to a glass of local wine at the end of the day, these are ten of the little luxuries that make a stay here special.

  1. Waking up to Akaroa views

There’s something about waking up somewhere beautiful that immediately changes the pace of your day. At Newton Heights, the surrounding hills, harbour and village become part of your stay. Open the curtains, take in the view and enjoy the fact that there’s nowhere you need to rush off to.

  1. A seriously comfortable bed

A weekend away should come with a very good night’s sleep. Our rooms have been created with comfort in mind, with luxurious king beds, beautiful linens and warm, considered interiors that make returning to your room at the end of the day something to look forward to.

  1. Breakfast without the rush

Forget grabbing something on the way out the door. Guests staying in our B&B rooms can start the morning with a complimentary cooked breakfast, while our apartments include a complimentary continental breakfast. Take your time, have another coffee and decide what you feel like doing with the day afterwards.

  1. Your own private spa

For guests staying in one of our apartments, a private spa pool adds another level of relaxation to an Akaroa escape. Sink into the warm water after a day exploring Banks Peninsula, or head outside in the evening and enjoy the stillness once the sun goes down.

  1. A stay with personality

Newton Heights isn’t a large hotel, and that’s very much the point. Each space has its own character, with a mix of beautiful fabrics, artwork, natural materials, collected pieces and thoughtful details. It feels personal, comfortable and a little bit special without ever feeling overly formal.

  1. Wine with a view

Akaroa is a place that encourages you to linger. Pick up a bottle of local wine, find a sunny spot on the deck and watch the changing light over the harbour. No reservation required, no need to dress up and nowhere else you need to be. Sometimes the simplest plans are the best ones.

  1. Evenings under the stars

Once the village quietens and the light disappears behind the hills, Akaroa takes on a different character. Step outside, look up and enjoy an evening away from the bright lights and busy streets of everyday life. Stargazing packages are available, just ask your hosts Gail and Brendon for more information.

  1. Being able to leave the car behind

One of our favourite luxuries is not having to drive everywhere. Newton Heights is only around a five-minute walk from Akaroa village, so you can wander down for coffee, explore the waterfront, browse the shops or head out for dinner without needing to think about the car.

  1. Being looked after by Gail & Brendon

A boutique stay should feel personal. Gail and Brendon are here to make Newton Heights feel like a home away from home, whether that’s sharing a local recommendation, helping you plan your day or simply making sure you have everything you need. It’s warm, genuine hospitality without the formality of a traditional hotel.

  1. Proper peace and quiet

Perhaps the biggest luxury of all is having the chance to switch off. Sleep in. Read a book. Sit outside. Take a long breakfast. Wander into town when you feel like it. Come back and do very little. A stay at Newton Heights gives you permission to slow things down and enjoy Akaroa at your own pace.

Your Akaroa escape at Newton Heights

Whether you’re planning a weekend away, celebrating something special or simply craving a couple of days somewhere beautiful, Newton Heights offers boutique accommodation in Akaroa where the little details make all the difference.

Our recent stay at Newton Heights B&B was the highlight of our three-week tour of South Island. The owner/hosts Brendon and Gail are engaging and gracious, their architecturally designed home is stunning and comfortable and the breakfast (complete with barista quality coffee choices) was abundant and divine. Beautiful views over Akaroa Harbour and easy walking distance to the village. Simply perfect in all regards!

This review may sound a little extreme however as a B&B experience this is a "must do". It's not just the joy de la vive of the welcoming hosts Gail and Brendan or the views from all corners of their beautiful home. Its not just the spa pool, the conversation, the silence as required, the comfort, cleanliness and fab breakfast its the feeling you've walked into the true warmth of an Akaroa experience - it was unforgettable!
