Why Akaroa is Perfect for a Girls’ Weekend Away

View from Caldera Estate

There’s something special about escaping with your favourite people for a weekend away. No packed schedules, no big agenda, just good conversation, great food, a few glasses of wine, and enough time to properly relax. If you’re looking for a New Zealand destination that feels scenic, stylish, and a little bit special, Akaroa is the perfect pick for a girls’ weekend.

Just a scenic drive from Christchurch, Akaroa feels like a true escape without being difficult to get to. Set on the edge of a beautiful harbour and surrounded by the hills of Banks Peninsula, it offers that rare combination of natural beauty and relaxed village charm. It’s easy to settle in here. The pace is slower, the views are better, and everything invites you to take your time.

A girls’ weekend in Akaroa can be exactly what you want it to be. For some, it might be all about unwinding, slow breakfasts, spa time, long lunches, and evenings spent chatting over wine. For others, it might be a chance to mix relaxation with a little exploring, from boutique shopping and gallery visits to coastal walks and harbour cruises. The beauty of Akaroa is that it suits both perfectly.

Start the day with breakfast and coffee, then wander through the village at your own pace. Browse local boutiques, stop in at art galleries, and admire the historic homes and pretty gardens that give Akaroa its unique character. If your group loves food and wine, you’ll find plenty to enjoy, from cosy cafes and harbourfront restaurants to nearby cellar doors like Caldera Estate, where you can linger over a tasting with beautiful views.

For a little adventure, book a harbour cruise, take a scenic walk, or head out to one of the surrounding bays. If your ideal girls’ weekend is more about slowing down than ticking things off, that works too. Akaroa is one of those places where simply being there feels like enough.

At Newton Heights, the experience is designed to be just as relaxing as the destination itself. With boutique rooms and apartments, harbour views, and warm hospitality from Gail and Brendon, it’s the kind of place that feels personal and welcoming from the moment you arrive. Some stays include private outdoor spa pools, perfect for an afternoon soak or a glass of bubbles under the stars. There are also spaces to gather, whether that’s for breakfast, a pre-dinner drink, or simply sitting together and taking in the view.

For groups of friends, the mix of room options makes Newton Heights especially appealing. You can book multiple rooms or combine accommodation to suit your group, while still enjoying that boutique, hosted feel. It’s ideal for birthdays, reunions, bridal weekends, or simply a long-overdue catch-up.

A girls’ weekend doesn’t need to be extravagant to feel memorable. Sometimes all it takes is the right setting, beautiful surroundings, and a place that encourages everyone to slow down and enjoy each other’s company. Akaroa offers all of that, with just the right amount of indulgence.

If you’ve been trying to find the perfect spot for your next weekend away, consider this your sign. Gather the group, pack something cosy and something nice for dinner, and let Akaroa do the rest.

Our recent stay at Newton Heights B&B was the highlight of our three-week tour of South Island. The owner/hosts Brendon and Gail are engaging and gracious, their architecturally designed home is stunning and comfortable and the breakfast (complete with barista quality coffee choices) was abundant and divine. Beautiful views over Akaroa Harbour and easy walking distance to the village. Simply perfect in all regards!

This review may sound a little extreme however as a B&B experience this is a "must do". It's not just the joy de la vive of the welcoming hosts Gail and Brendan or the views from all corners of their beautiful home. Its not just the spa pool, the conversation, the silence as required, the comfort, cleanliness and fab breakfast its the feeling you've walked into the true warmth of an Akaroa experience - it was unforgettable!
